This patient has a wide based gait due to sensory ataxia. Widening of the base is a common compensation for balance impairment. Normally, the medial malleoli pass within ??? inches. An increase in this intermalleolar distance indicates widening of gait. It occurs in cerebellar disease, especially with vermian involvement, and in sensory ataxia due to peripheral nerve or posterior column disease.
